Martin Doole

Martin was born and bred in Hastings and moved to Napier in 1973 after his O.E.  He became a partner of the then firm of Carlile McLean in 1976. Martin has had over 30 years' experience in legal practice and with his knowledge and expertise has been involved in a number of complex commercial and property transactions.

Gavin Thornton

Gavin Thornton
LLB (Hons)

Gavin was born and raised in Hawkes Bay.  He joined Carlile Dowling after working in London, and became a partner in 1981. Gavin has a wide range of experience in all aspects of litigation, but his main specialty is relationship property disputes.  In this area he has conducted seminars for the New Zealand Law Society and has appeared in the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.

He is also a member of the Crown Solicitor's Prosecution Panel, and a LEADR trained mediator.

Michael Morgan

Michael Morgan
LLB (Hons), Dip Bus Administration (Distinction)

Michael is Hawkes Bay born and bred, with a wealth of local knowledge and contacts.  A partner of Carlile Dowling since 2001, he has extensive experience in negotiating, structuring, documenting and settling complex commercial, property and estate planning matters.

Michael is currently the President of the Hawkes Bay District Law Society and a councillor of the Eastern Institute of Technology.  He is a former trustee of the Art Deco Trust and Opera Hawkes Bay.

David Chan

David Chan
LL.B, BA

David's area is civil litigation and dispute resolution.  He practised for 12 years in Melbourne, including 5 years as a barrister sole.  He was a senior associate and partner of a national law firm in New Zealand for six years, and joined Carlile Dowling in 2007.

His key areas of practice are:

  • Commercial dispute resolution including court proceedings at all levels, arbitrations, adjudications, tribunals, mediations and negotiations
  • Commercial law and financing
  • Civil and commercial law including:  property disputes, contract, negligence, public law, competition law, company law, banking law, education law.
Paul Morgan

Paul Morgan

Paul joined Carlile Dowling in February 2005 having previously practiced in the Corporate and Commercial law team of a national law firm, based in Wellington.

Paul commenced training for his legal career in 1999 having already gained significant commercial business experience. Prior to entering legal practice, Paul spent 6 years as a Rural Finance Manager for a bank in Hawkes Bay and 4 years as a sheep and beef farm manager. Paul brings diverse experience and knowledge to his practice, gained both from within and outside of the legal profession.

Paul practices in the Property and Commercial Team of Carlile Dowling with an emphasis on:

  • Rural property transactions and advising primary industry businesses
  • Commercial property and commercial business transactions
  • Trusts, asset protection and estate planning matters
